Our Story
Kate and Jane met in 2012 while employed with a successful midstream energy business and managed the accounting for multiple pipelines, processing facilities, and assets worth over $1 billion. Through this experience, they developed a deep level of respect for each other’s professional expertise, work ethic, and drive for results. Kate and Jane partnered together in 2018 to form Prism Accounting, with the goal of bringing their combined years of experience to help small businesses achieve financial aptitude and efficiency.
Kate Thompson
As co-founder of Prism Accounting, Kate brings a wealth of technical accounting knowledge through her years of experience in highly complex organizations.
After graduating from Colorado State University with a BSBA in Accounting, Kate was recruited by Deloitte & Touche, one of the world’s largest public accounting firms, to provide auditing services for clients across a variety of industries. Through this experience, Kate learned how critical it was to maintain clean, efficient books, and realized she was more interested helping businesses achieve this through daily accounting functions. After leaving Deloitte, she was able to put this passion into practice and served as Accounting Manager for NTT Verio for 7 years before moving back to Durango to raise her family.
Kate brings a unique perspective after having sat on both sides of a corporate audit, and has extensive experience in intercompany reconciliations, budgeting, and variance analysis. She is a master spreadsheet builder and can easily put these skills to good use to interpret large amounts of financial information.
As a Durango native and graduate of Durango High School, Kate has strong roots in the local community. She and her husband Gabe (a 6th generation Durango native!) have three children. As a family, they love to trail run, ski, mountain bike, hike, and camp. Fun fact: Kate can complete a Rubix cube and can't pass by one that needs attention!
Jane Goessel
Jane believes that having accurate financials and the means to interpret them is crucial for successful business decision-making.
Prior to co-founding Prism Accounting, Jane began her career at one of the nation’s largest privately-held energy companies in Denver. She relocated to Durango in 2008 and is proud to call it home. Since then, she has served as the lead accountant for several international organizations in a variety of industries, including professional consulting, oil and gas, and manufacturing. Jane is a critical thinker whose strengths lie in her keen eye for detail and passion for process transformation.
Jane graduated with honors from the University of Denver’s Daniels College of Business, earning a Masters in Business Administration and BSBA in Finance and Marketing. During her undergraduate program, she studied international business at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. Jane is a devoted academic and has continued her professional education through accounting coursework at Fort Lewis College.
Born and raised in Missouri, Jane is a true Midwesterner at heart. She loves spending time with her husband and two young children exploring the outdoors, fishing, camping, hiking, skiing, and biking. Fun fact: Jane was a former figure skating instructor and landed her first axle at age 14!
